Dean Stavrakas brings a wealth of baseball knowledge and experience to the Lake View Wildcat baseball program. Self-deprecating and sometimes politically incorrect, Dean possesses a deep understanding of the game of baseball. Loving the game is second nature to Dean and he shares his love of baseball with all his players.
After a distinguished high school and college playing career, Dean Stavrakas, Lake View Varsity baseball's head coach, has been managing baseball teams since 1970. Coach Dean began managing at the semi-pro level in 1970 and began a national semi-pro program just a few years later. He has led teams to the American Amateur Baseball Congress (AABC) World Series, capturing the championship in 1981 and 1985. His teams also competed in the NBC (National Baseball Congress) tournament, finishing in the top ten seven years in a row, taking 2nd in 1982. In 1989 Dean managed his team to the championship of the Caribbean International Baseball Tournament, shocking the Cuban National team in the process. Later, Dean's teams were runner-up at the U.S. Open Tournament in Nevada and in the Canadian International Tournament. Dean has led players to victories over such international powerhouses as Cuba, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua and Taiwan. Between the years of 1970 and 1986 Coach Stavrakas led his teams to over 1000 wins as a manager. In 1991 Dean began coaching at the high school varsity level at Hales Franciscan. He moved to St. Benedict in Chicago the following year, closer to his home. From 1992 until 2001, Dean totally transformed the St. Benedict baseball program. Winning at a .690 clip, Dean managed the St. Benedict's squad to a 229-104 record. St. Ben's was Conference champion of the Chicago Prep League eight consecutive years, winning 46 consecutive games at one point. St. Ben's also had an 81-2 conference run while Dean managed the baseball program. In 2003 Dean moved to Lake View to reclaim Wildcat glory. Last year (2006) was the first 20-win season for the Wildcats since the city championship season in 1977. Dean also reached 300 wins at the high school level during the 2006 campaign. His next goal is to win the city championship with the Wildcats in 2007, the thirtieth anniversary of their last city championship. Dean has been married to his wife Joanne since 1970 and has two sons, Symeon and George. Dean has always been active in his church, coaching church teams in various sports. Dean is also a past President of the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce and has been awarded many distinctive honors including Supreme President Order of Sons of Pericles, National Republican Congressional Committee's Business Advisory Council's Business Man of the Year of the and in 2006 was included in the Who's Who among America's Teachers. Some players Dean has coached have reached the Major Leagues, including current players Scott Spezio of the St. Louis Cardinals and Sal Fasano of the New York Yankees. Former Major-leaguers coached at one time by Dean include Ron Kittle, American League Rookie of the Year in 1983 (Chicago White Sox) and Todd Hundley, who caught for the Chicago Cubs as did his father, Randy. It must be noted that since Dean has been coaching baseball at the high school level, every senior who has played for Dean has graduated from high school and many have gone on to play at the college level.
