A.J. Plese could not help but smile.

“Finally. Finally,” he said after Joliet Catholic opened its baseball season last Saturday with a 14-0 victory over Lemont at Gillespie Field.

Plese was in the lineup that day as the designated hitter and cleanup man. The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder’s claim to fame is as a pitcher, perhaps one of the top senior right-handers in the Chicagoland area.
