Seven hundred wins.

That’s how many victories the Olympia softball and baseball teams have combined for over the last 11 seasons. Basic English grammar rules dictate that it be spelled out, but it’s such an impressive total that it deserves the respect of being spelled out. Perhaps even more impressive is the Spartans’ winning percentage. With a combined overall record of 700-129-5, the squads win games at an 84 percent clip.

Over that decade-plus of dominance, the Spartans have combined to make 13 appearances at their respective IHSA state finals and brought home six trophies.

“I think there’s several common themes,” Olympia baseball coach Ron Smith said. “But the biggest one in my mind is that we start our kids young and they play together for a long time.”
