The buzz surrounding the unveiling of the Edwardsville Tiger baseball program’s plan to start a summer program and seventh and eighth grade teams on Nov. 9 met mixed reviews in the community.

EHS head baseball coach Tim Funkhouser and Tigers’ athletic director Brad Bevis tagged it “creating opportunities” for the kids.

“Middle school baseball, basically everybody has it in our area,” said Funkhouser at the time of the programs at Lincoln and Liberty Middle Schools set to begin in Fall 2010. “When we only had one school we thought it would diminish opportunities because there would only be one team, but with two schools we’d actually create more opportunities. We’ll have seventh and eighth grade teams and just like the other programs, overseen by the high school, me and then we’ll staff it accordingly.”
